強森的父親和祖父都是世界職業摔跤界屢獲殊榮的名人。當他二十出頭時，強森搬到了賓夕法尼亞州開始專注于美式橄欖球運動。他在邁阿密大學時加入了邁阿密大學的美式橄欖球隊，并在1991年贏得了他第一個全國冠軍。
