A few days later, the ant saw a hunter aiming a gun at the dove. He bit the man in the foot sharply.

A man walking in the night slipped from a rock. Afraid that he would fall down thousands of feet, becau he knew that place was a very deep valley, he took hold of a branch that was hanging over the rock. In the night all he couls e was a bottomless abyss. He shouted, his own shout reflected back--there was nobody to hear.

You can imagine that man and his whole night of scare. Every moment there was death, his hands were becoming cold, he was losing his grip…… and as the sun came out he looked down and he laughed. There was no abyss. Just six inches down there was a rock. He could have rested the whole night, slept well---the rock was big enough---but the whole night was a nightmare.

Fear is only six inches deep. Now it is up to you whether you want to go on cling to the branch and turn your life into a nightmare, or whether you would love to leave the branch and stand on your feet.

              There is nothing to fear.

It had been three years since King Zhuang of Chu ascended the throne, but he had neither issued a decree nor dealt with any state affairs.

Furthermore, there were no deeds worth mentioning.

All the civil and military officials of the court couldn't understand what was the matter.

One day, a military official quietly asked King of Chu in the carriage:

"Your Majesty, I heard that in the south, there was a big bird dwelling in the hills.

Three years pasd, it neither flew nor cried.

Could Your Majesty tell me the reason?"

King Zhuang of Chu smiled and answered:"It didn't spread its wings to fly for three years in order to grow full-fledged.

              楚莊王笑了一笑,回答說:“三年不展翅飛翔,是為了讓羽翼長得更加豐滿;

It didn't cry for three years in order to carefully obrve the conditions of the people in the world.

              三年不鳴,是在細心觀察天下的民情。

              This bird, once it flies, will soar high into the sky;

              這只鳥,不飛則已,一飛沖天;

once it cries, it will startle the world with a single cry."

Another half a year pasd before King Zhuang of Chu began to personally administer state affairs.

He abolished ten outmoded rules and regulations, issued nine new policies, ntenced five ministers to death for their evil deeds and promoted six persons with real talents.

From then on, the State of Chu became stronger and stronger.

Wang Yuqi was a well-known expert in driving carriages in the State of Zhao.

When Xiang Zi of Zhao heard of this, he asked Wang to teach him to drive a carriage.

Not long after, Xiang Zi of Zhao thought he had already mastered the skills, and suggested arace against Wang.

He didn't expect that after he had changed hors three times in succession, he still lost therace to Wang.

Xiang Zi of Zhao was flustered and exasperated.

He said to Wang: "In teaching me to drive, have you held anything back and not taught me allyour skills?"

Hearing this, Wang smiled and said: "You ought to believe that I have taught you all the skills indriving a carriage.

But, when Your Highness was racing against me, you always tried to keep in front of me.

Once you lagged behind, you strove to overtake me; but after you overtook me, you wereafraid that I would catch up with you.

You focud all your attention on me.

You forgot that in driving a carriage, the most important thing is to take care of the horswholeheartedly and pay attention to the handlebars of the carriage and the harness to ewhether they fit or not.

              忘記了凡是駕車,最關鍵的是首先要一心一意地調理馬匹,注意車把、馬套合適不合適;

Only then can you give the rein to the hors and let them gallop for 1,000 li.

But during the race, you not only strove to be the first but also feared to lag behind.

How could you concentrate your mind on driving the carriage?"

Hearing this, Xiang Zi of Zhao was enlightened.

He gave a deep sigh and said: "Your words certainly hit the nail on the head. That is the veryreason why I lagged behind."

One day, the miracle-working doctor Bian Que saw Huan Gong, King of the State ofCai, and said:

"Your Majesty, I think you are ill.

But your illness is only under the skin and can be easily cured.

If you do not treat it now,I'm afraid your condition will become rious."

Huan Gong did not believe him. He said: "I am not ill."

After Bian Que left, Huan Gong said to his subjects around him:

"The doctors always like to treat people who are not ill in order to brag about their superbmedical skill."

Ten days later, Bian Que saw Huan Gong again.

He said: "Your Majesty, your illness has invaded your muscles.

If you do not treat it now, your condition will become more rious."

Huan Gong was displead with what he heard and did not listen to Bian Que.

Another ten days later, Bian Que saw Huan Gong and said anxiously:

"Your Majesty, your illness has invaded your stomach and intestines.

If your do not treat it, your condition will worn."

Huan Gong still would not listen to Bian Que.

Another ten days later, when Bian Que saw Huan Gong, he turned round at once and left.

Huan Gong was surprid and nt someone to catch up Bian Que to ask him for the reason.

Bian Que said:"When a person gets ill and his illness is only under the skin, it can be easilycured with medical plaster or decoction.

              扁鵲說:“一個人生了病,當病在皮膚表面時,只要用膏藥和湯藥洗,就能夠治好;

              When it is between the skin and the flesh, it can still be cured by acupuncture;

              如果發展到皮肉之間,用針灸還可以治好;

even if it develops into the stomach and intestines, medical decoctions will still be effective.

              即使發展到腸胃里,服用湯藥還有療效;

But when it reaches them arrow, then one can only resign to one's fate, for the doctor can nolonger do anything about it.

Now His Majesty's illness has penetrated into the marrow. I can do nothing to cure him."

Five days afterwards, Huan Gong felt pain all over his body.

              He nt for Bian Que.

            A great mountain大山

Long ago a great mountain began to rumble and shake.

People came from far and near to e what would happen.

"A great river will be born." said one.

"Surely nothing less than a mighty dragon will come out." said another.

"A god himlf will spring form the rocks." said a third.

Finally, after days of expectation a small crack appeared in the mountain. And out popped --- a mou.

Just becau someone makes a lot of fuss, it doesn't mean he is important.

A RUSTIC STEALS CLOTHES FROM THE PALACE TREASURY

Once upon a time there was a rustic who stole garments from the palace and then escaped to a remote place. The king nt men to arch for him in all directions. Finally, he was arrested and taken to the king who accud him of theft and asked him where he had got the clothes. The rustic answered that they belonged to his grandfather. The king then ordered him to put them on. He did not know how to wear them. He put on his arms what should be worn on his legs. What he ought to have on his waist, he put on his head.

Seeing this, the king summoned his ministers for consultation on the matter. "If the clothes belonged to your grandfather, you should know how to wear them. How can you wear them in all wrong ways? It's certain that they are not your old clothes. You have stolen them," said the king.

Figuratively speaking, here the king is like Buddha; the valuable clothes, the Buddhist teachings; the stupid rustic, the heretic.

A heretic, who has eavesdropped on Buddhism, makes it for his own. He then misinterprets it, becau he does not know the real meaning of its teachings.

This heretic is like the rustic who stole the king's valuable clothes without knowing how to wear them properly and put them on in all the wrong ways.

The swallows and sparrows are very plead to find a place on the roof of the hall for their nests.

The mother birds are feeding their babies with pleasure, which assumes a scene of peace and harmony.

But they have never thought of the following scene: the chimney at the top of the kitchen might break, the fire might leap up to the roof and the burning purling might destroy their nests.

But tho swallows and sparrows are unmindful of the coming disaster.

They go on with their superficial happiness brought by peace and calm.

You depend on your master for food, and he makes you carry heavy loads every day and beats you unmercifully." At that moment a lion appeared on the scene, and made no attempt to molest5 the pack-ass owing to the prence of the driver, but he fell upon the wild ass, who had no one to protect him, and without more ado made a meal of him.

It is no u being your own master unless you can stand up for yourlf.

One day he es a beautiful bell at the top of a door. “Oh! How nice! I will take it home.” He thinks, “What can I do?” After a while he has a “good” idea. “Aha! I have an idea now. I can plug my ears. Then I will not hear the ring when I take off the bell.”

Then he does so. But as soon as he takes off the bell, the owner opens the door. “What are you doing?” the owner says angrily.

The gorillas in the valleys in the south often lived together in groups of veral tens. They were fond of drinking wine, and even fonder of imitating man's behavior.

People knew very well their habits and often put wine or distiller's grains on the roadside together with many straw sandals connected together with ropes.

The gorillas knew this was a trick to lure them into traps and curd:

"Humph! Do you think we don't know your tricks? We'll never be taken in!"

So they called one another, turned round and left.

But they had already smelled the aroma of the wine, and couldn't bear to part with it. Even after they left, they would turn their heads to look back. When they saw no one there, they would turn back; and after they turned back, they were afraid of being deceived, and left again. After much hesitation, they finally said to themlves:

"Just for a taste of the wine. It won't matter as long as we don't get drunk."

Shortly afterwards, they agreed to come back to drink the wine. When they got drunk, they forgot everything. Every gorilla put on the straw sandals and imitated the way man walks.

As a result, they fell down one after another and were all caught alive by people.
