國學啟蒙讀物中有一部梁朝散騎侍郎周興嗣編纂的《千字文》，不少幼童尚可脫口而出：“天地玄黃 ，宇宙洪荒 。日月盈昃 ，辰宿列張 。寒來暑往 ，秋收冬藏 。閏余成歲， 律呂調(diào)陽 。”這幾天“洪荒”這個詞“上了頭條”。

Nathan Sturman的《千字文》譯本如是開篇：The sky was

black and earth yellow; space and time vast, limitless. 這里對“洪荒”的解釋有所引申，用“荒”來形容“宇”之廣，用“洪”來形容“宙”之久。

記得賈誼《過秦論》中有文：“囊括四海之意，并吞八荒之心。”這“八荒”的字面意思是“八個方向”，古人常用“六合八方”指代“宇宙”一詞中的“宇”（空間）。那么這“洪”又是什么呢？嚴復翻譯赫胥黎大作《天演論》，有說法叫“遠及洪荒”，指上古久遠年代，諸多人類神話中都描述里其發(fā)展早期的“大洪水”，這個“洪”大概可以想象為大禹或諾亞的史前時代。

CCTV英語頻道提供了“直白”的版本“prehistorical powers”，中國氣象臺網(wǎng)則使用了“primeval”，大概受到電影《遠古入侵》(Primeval)的啟發(fā)。
