When we talk about tho famous people, we all like to know

how they succeed. Meanwhile we all admire their personal

special virtues which lead them to triumph. And it is obvious that

many successful people have some personality characteristics in

common. As far as I concerned, I deem that persistence,

prudence, confidence and courage are the most important.

Firstly, I think persistence should come first before the other

three personality characters. As we all know that a person cannot

always successfully reach his aim at his first try, there are many

barriers waiting for him. Therefore the person will fail many times

before he gets his victory. If he doesn't persist in trying again and

again and make a breakthrough, thus he will stay still, no

progress. He may not move forward or even regress. A person

without the personal character of persistence can’t finally

succeed in getting his goal.

Secondly, a man who wants to be successful should also own

the characteristic of prudence. The inventor of the electric bulb

gives a good example for explaining that. It is said that the

inventor tried to u thousands kinds of metal to make electric

bulb filament in order to find the most suitable metal which can

let the lamp light longer and brighter. I suppo that without the

very prudential work, the inventor could not triumph in the end.

A lf- made man should do his jobs with prudence, sometimes

even should be careful doing a very trivial thing. Like when tho

scientists or mathematicians are dealing with a complex matter,

if they make a small mistake, the efforts which they made before

will be in vain. Accordingly, cautiousness is necessary.

In addition, the lf- made men all are lf-confident and

courageous. As the saying goes, “fortune never helps the man

who courage has failed.” Suppod that a soldier los his

confidence and gallantry to fight when he is in the field of the

battle, I am sure that he does not have the fortune to survive

successfully. Therefore people who want to achieve their goals in

their work all should be lf-confident and courageous.

In a word, my view regarding tho famous people’s

success is that they persist in working hard, do their jobs with

prudence, are confident in themlves and have courage to

overcome any kinds of difficulties; it is the reason that they can

make themlves into a celebrity and admired by others.

When I was 27 years old, I left a very demanding job in

management consulting for a job that was even more

demanding: teaching. I went to teach venth graders math in

the New York City public schools. And like any teacher, I made

quizzes and tests. I gave out homework assignments. When the

work came back, I calculated grades.

What struck me was that I.Q. was not the only difference

between my best and my worst students. Some of my strongest

performers did not have stratospheric I.Q. scores. Some of my

smartest kids weren't doing so well.

And that got me thinking. The kinds of things you need to

learn in venth grade math, sure, they're hard: ratios, decimals,

the area of a parallelogram. But the concepts are not

impossible, and I was firmly convinced that every one of my

students could learn the material if they worked hard and long

enough.

After veral more years of teaching, I came to the

conclusion that what we need in education is a much better

understanding of students and learning from a motivational

perspective, from a psychological perspective. In education, the

one thing we know how to measure best is I.Q., but what if doing

well in school and in life depends on much more than your ability

to learn quickly and easily?

So I left the classroom, and I went to graduate school to

become a psychologist. I started studying kids and adults in all

kinds of super challenging ttings, and in every study my

question was, who is successful here and why? My rearch team

and I went to West Point Military Academy. We tried to predict

which cadets would stay in military training and which would

drop out. We went to the National Spelling Bee and tried to

predict which children would advance farthest in competition.

We studied rookie teachers working in really tough

neighborhoods, asking which teachers are still going to be here

in teaching by the end of the school year, and of tho, who will

be the most effective at improving learning outcomes for their

students? We partnered with private companies, asking, which of

the salespeople is going to keep their jobs? And who's going

to earn the most money? In all tho very different contexts, one

characteristic emerged as a significant predictor of success. And

it wasn't social intelligence. It wasn't good looks, physical health,

and it wasn't I.Q. It was grit.

Grit is passion and perverance for very long-term goals.

Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day

out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years,

and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living

life like it's a marathon, not a sprint.

A few years ago, I started studying grit in the Chicago public

schools. I asked thousands of high school juniors to take grit

questionnaires, and then waited around more than a year to e

who would graduate. Turns out that grittier kids were

significantly more likely to graduate, even when I matched them

on every characteristic I could measure, things like family income,

standardized achievement test scores, even how safe kids felt

when they were at school. So it's not just at West Point or the

National Spelling Bee that grit matters. It's also in school,

especially for kids at risk for dropping out. To me, the most

shocking thing about grit is how little we know, how little science

knows, about building it. Every day, parents and teachers ask me,

"How do I build grit in kids? What do I do to teach kids a solid

work ethic? How do I keep them motivated for the long run?" The

honest answer is, I don't know. (Laughter) What I do know is that

talent doesn't make you gritty. Our data show very clearly that

there are many talented individuals who simply do not follow

through on their commitments. In fact, in our data, grit is usually

unrelated or even inverly related to measures of talent.

So far, the best idea I've heard about building grit in kids is

something called "growth mindt." This is an idea developed at

Stanford University by Carol Dweck, and it is the belief that the

ability to learn is not fixed, that it can change with your effort. Dr.

Dweck has shown that when kids read and learn about the brain

and how it changes and grows in respon to challenge, they're

much more likely to pervere when they fail, becau they don't

believe that failure is a permanent condition.

So growth mindt is a great idea for building grit. But we

need more. And that's where I'm going to end my remarks,

becau that's where we are. That's the work that stands before

us. We need to take our best ideas, our strongest intuitions, and

we need to test them. We need to measure whether we've been

successful, and we have to be willing to fail, to be wrong, to start

over again with lessons learned.

In other words, we need to be gritty about getting our kids

grittier.

The power of perverance

Dear friends:

If you can dream it, you can do it.——Walt Disney

It was a long four years. Even after I had actually graduated,

the nightmares began to haunt me, the university would call to

say I hadn’t truly graduated. There had been a mistake and

there was just one more class I needed to take. I was always so

relieved to wake up and realize that it had only been a bad dream.

In reality, I had completed every cour needed for my degree,

and I was a full-fledged college graduate!

Now, the rest of my life loomed ahead of me. Sometimes a

bachelor’s degree prepares you for a specific occupation——you train to be an accountant, you graduate and get a position

in an accounting firm. Often, however, your stint in college only

prepares you to make further decisions regarding your future.

You’re pretty sure what you don’t want to do!

During my nior year of college, I had toyed with the idea

of changing my major. At that point, I had finally discovered what

captured my heart. But, wanting to finally be finishing school was

a stronger pull. So, I took a few cours in physiology and

exerci science, but not enough to receive a degree in physical

therapy. That would require advanced schooling, beyond my

bachelor’s degree——and I just wasn’tready to tackle that.

Having completed my B.C. degree, I didn’t have any intentions

of furthering my education.

So, I did the safe thing and got an office job——the very

thing I was sure that I didn’t want to do! I detested the office

policies, the suits I had to wear and the downtown environment

that I had to drive to every day. I knew this was not where I

belonged.

But god knew what path my career was to follow. A position

opened up at the most exclusive health club in our city, so I

applied. This was my kind of environment——an active, vibrant

kind of place——completely at the opposite end of the spectrum

from the office environment where I found mylf. The position

required that I work Saturday nights and Sunday mornings.

Perfect, I thought! I could keep my office job Monday through

Friday and work at my dream job on the weekends. This

arrangement lasted veral months until, eventually, a full-time

position opened up and I was able to resign from my office job.

Over the next few years, I worked my way up the leader,

gaining experience in veral different departments. I found my

niche as the director of member rvices——catering to our

clientele and providing them with numerous cutting-edge

programs. I would have stayed at that job forever——it emed

to be the pinnacle of all my dreams fulfilled. Here were fellow

employees who had a passion for the same things that I did——health and fitness. Yet again, god had other plans for my

two years, a newer, bigger, better and more state-of-

the-art health club facility was built——just five miles down the

road. And, in turn, the owner lost many members to that club.

And, in turn, the owner lost thousands of dollars. One by one we

were each laid off.

After trying unsuccessfully to land another similar position

elwhere, I knew what I had to do. Go back to school!thanks!

Success is made up of one percent talent and ninety-nine

percent effort.

The process of climbing is hard, but the scenery of the top is

different than it in the bottom of the order to e the

scenery of the top, we must overcome all difficulties

bravely .something easy to say , but difficult to do. The peak looks

so far away from our, the leg is so painful, and others say that,

forget it, you can't climb up, quickly stop and rest.

So, the higher of the mountain, the fewer people. But, could

we give up the scenery of the peak? although Success is far away,

but there it is, it hands to us ,and encourage us to persist a while,

the most beautiful scenery will belong to us. So, no matter how

tired, no matter how hard, we still adhere to the teeth, until

success. Like Chris Gardner, in order to survive, to his son, he

works very hard, although so tired that even want to give up, but

he knew, giving up is a thorough failure, means coming back to

the origin, losting hope at the same time. You got a dream, you

gonna protect it. When we at the most hard time, hold on for a

moment, will be the most beautiful scenery.

Successful people will never give up after the storm, rather

than born with the ability to got !

We are in a constant state of trying to get something better

and are often trying to be someone different,even

When I was a little girl,I often want to give up study instead

play my father will told me "Perverance is the

golden key to being successful in anything you 's a matter of

hanging on long afte others have quit".When I was a teenager I

like to make track for a star,and like images like,including dress

my Dad always tell me that"Be what you are, not what

you aren't,becau when you are what you aren't,then you aren't

what you are".All of the things are inspired me so much.

Sometimes,I think my father was a philosopher,sometimes

think he is a activists,always t an example for his child ,do what

a father should is always working hard to feed large family,

he is always considerate to forgive his naughty children,moreover

he filial piety to the old person,to repay parents' brought up. In a

word, he always so good.

Of cour he's not a iron man,he also has a fragile, but he

never lo lf,and 's more, when I meet with

some troubles and want to give up, he always encourage me.I

still remember what he told me "perverance overcomes almost

you fall, perverance tells you get

you are defeated,perverance tells you to try again .When you

Nowadays, I am an adults,and as a college student,I always
