Racial Discrimination from the Crash

【Abstract】As we all know that there are many differences between two

different cultures. Through the film Crash, we can e the conflicts

between blacks and whites. This paper will centers on the ethnic conflict

in this movie.

我們可以看到白人與黑人之間發生的沖突。本文將以電影中的種族沖

突為中心點展開論述。

1. Introduction

The movie Crash mainly tells us veral stories occurred in Los Angeles

among some leading roles participating in a car crash about the topic of

racial discrimination. It is a film linked with the backgrounds of the Los

Angeles’s culture cloly. As we all know, Los Angeles is covered with

immigrants from various countries. Different cultures bump into each

other and this may make big influence on our daily life. There are many

conflicts between the blacks and whites, or even the Asian people.

2. Body

The racial discrimination in this film is obvious. Crash is a film linked

with the background of the Los Angeles’ culture. As we all know that Los

Angeles is a city which covered with people from many countries. People

from different countries have different culture background. This film told

us veral stories which happened among American, black people,

Mexican and Persian. At the beginning of the film, there are two black

people walking in the street. One of the black young man said, “It’s just

black people demeaning other black people, using that word (negro) over

and over. Have you ever heard white people calling each other “honky”

all the time?” From his words, we can e he has a prejudice against

white people, like the blacks are biad by the whites. As Jean (the two

black men steeled her car) said, “…it was my fault becau I knew it was

gonna happen. But if a white person es two black men walking towards

her and she turns and walks away, she’s a racist, right?” If you know the

history of America, you’ll understand why there has prejudice between

American and Black people.

As the action of the black youth, he was too nsitive with the world

which led by the white people. He hated to be discriminated by the white

people, at the same time, his lf discrimination is innate. When faced

with the problem of racial discrimination, we not only need to think about

the discriminators, but also need to think tho who were discriminated.

We can’t always criticize the discriminators, becau there has many

social and historical reasons behind it. What’s more, how to face the

reality for the people who were be discriminated is a problem can’t be

ignored. When the young man met the black director, the director said to

him, “You should feel ashamed.” It is uttered a clear point of view, that is,

people should respect themlves first and then you will gain the respect

from others.

The black director cho to swallow insult and humiliation silently after

his wife was humiliated by the white policeman. It is illustrated that the

director accepted the assimilation in the world led by the white people.

He has a high social position in this world; he is the beneficiary of this

world, so he obeys the rules of the game. When his wife asked him why

he kept silent, his told his wife that is becau the policemen have guns.

But in the fact, he was not being subdued by the gun, but subdued by the

psychology that he was discriminated. When he was stopped by the

policemen cond time, although he feared the policemen, he proceed

without hesitation to get off. He vented his dissatisfaction with the long

hidden depression. Finally, the young policeman helped him returned his

car safely. He was not won the dignity, but the awakening of himlf.

3. Conclusion

The film depicts the cultural conflict and ethnic conflict. The white

people want to respect colored people, but they discriminate against the

blacks in their heart. The policeman said, “In any real city, you walk, you

know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody

touches you. We’re always behind this mental and glass. I think we miss

that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel

something.” Communication between people and people become more

and more difficult. We all know that communication is important, but

they didn’t know how to deal with it. And the complex society will make

people can’t face the life simply. As the song in the film, “So maybe

tomorrow, I’ll find my way home”, the people who “crashed” each other

will find the way to home.
