1)Henry Fairlie (1924— ) a contributing editor (特約編輯) to the New Republic (新共和
國) as well as a contributor (撰稿人) to other journals. His works: The Kennedy Promi
(肯尼迪諾言), the Life of Politics (政治的生命), the Spoiled Child of the Western World
(西方世界寵壞的孩子).
2)The Pub: public hou or a local
Besides offering different kinds of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and providing hot
and cold food, it rves as a place for meeting friends and for entertainment. For instance,
many pubs have TV ts, amument machines and juke-boxes (投幣式自動電唱機) and
provide facilities for playing darts(投鏢), billiards(臺球), dominoes(西洋骨牌) and
similar games. Some also employ musicians for evening entertainment, such as piano
playing, folk singing and modern jazz.

1) the king’s English: the correct or standard English
2) indulge in: give way to one’s own desire 盡情享受,沉溺

e.g. Their marriage is ~. 他們的婚姻破裂了。
7) get out of bed on the wrong side: be bad tempered for the day 整日心情不好 (This
phra derives from the superstition that it was unlucky to t the left foot on the ground
first on getting out of the bed.)
e.g. Let him alone. He got ~ today.
8) delve into: investigate… for information, make rearch into… 鉆研,深入研究
e.g. In order to find out how man came into being,
he ~ed for information into old books.
9) Jupiter: the planet Jupiter(木星) and the information about it gathered by a U.S. space
probe(探測飛船)
10) all at once: suddenly, at the same time (突然,同時)
11) make / offer resistance to: opposing, using force against in order to prevent the
advance of… 抵抗,對抗,
e.g. They were defeated becau they made no ~ to the enemy’s advance. 他們失敗了
