三、 閱讀理解
18. Ri and Fall of Britpop
What Is Britpop?
That’s a good question. Some may say it is a kind of pop music. You can often tell a Britpop
song when you hear it. However, bands like Oasis are considered “Britpop” but their style is
more rock than pop.
So how do we recognize the difference between Britpop and rock or pop?
Well, Britpop mixes a number of different pop and rock styles with interesting words,
stories and attitudes. But it’s not just about the music."Britpop is also about fashion, art and
politics.
Fashion and Art?
Yeah, if you watch the music videos you’ll e how fashionable Britpop singers were. Some
of them also hired famous artists to help them make some pretty creative videos. Damien Hurst,
for example, produced some of Blur’s music videos.
You Said Politics Too?
Yes. At one point the UK’s political leader, Tony Blair, talked about how much he enjoyed
Britpop. Perhaps he was just trying to sound cool to win some extra votes from young people.
So When Did It All Begin?
Britpop came and went in the 1990s. Some of the main bands included Oasis, Blur, Suede
and Pulp. The bands had some big hits at the time. Blur and Oasis had a big battle to be the
most popular band.
What Happened to Britpop in the End?
It died out. I mean, by the end of the 1990s it was no longer fashionable. Fewer songs were
produced and most Britpop bands broke up.
20. What’s the style of Britpop according to the text?
A. It’s a kind of pop music.

19. 閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出最佳選項。
The worldwide increa in the u of cellphones has caud concerns regarding
possible harmful effects caud by cellphone radiation. People are particularly concerned
that the radiation will put cellphone urs at a higher risk of suffering from cancer.
However, studies of the association between cellphone u and the risk of brain cancer
have reached different conclusions(some, but not all, studies showed incread risk).
Rearchers conducted a study to examine if cellphone radiation affected regional
activity in the human brain. The study, conducted between January 1 and December 31,
2009,included 47 participants. Cellphones were placed on the left and right ears, and
brain imaging was performed to measure brain gluco metabolism(葡萄糖代謝) twice:
one with the right cellphone activated for 50 minutes(“on” condition) and once with both
cellphones deactivated(“off” condition). An analysis was conducted to check the
association of metabolism and cellphone radiation. The scans were compared to asss
the effect of cellphone u on brain gluco metabolism.
The rearchers found that whole-brain metabolism did not differ between the on and
off conditions. However there were regional effects. Metabolism in some brain region
was higher (about 7 percent) for cellphone on than for cellphone off conditions. This
indicates that the regions expected to absorb more cellphone radiation were the ones that
showed the larger increas in gluco metabolism.
The results provide evidence that the human brain is nsitive to the effects of
acute(劇烈的) cellphone radiation. However, how cellphone radiation could affect brain
gluco metabolism is unclear.
Concerns have been raid by the possibility that cellphone radiation may induce
brain cancer. Results of this study provide evidence that acute cellphone radiation affects
brain metabolic activity. However, the results provide no information as to their
connection regarding possible carcinogenic(致癌的) effects (or lack of such effects) of
chronic(長期的) cellphone u.
Further studies are needed to asss if the effects could have long-term harm.
63. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The current situation of cellphone u.
B. To phone or not to phone.
C. The link between cellphone u and brain cancer.
D. Long-term harmful effects of cellphones.
