LocatedinthecenterofBeijing,theentirepalacearea,rectangularin

shapeand72hectaresinsize,issurroundedbywallstenmetershighanda

cornerofthewallstandsawatchtowerwithadouble-eaveroofcoveredwithyellowglazedtiles.

Themainbuildings,thesixgreathalls,onefollowingtheother,aret

facingsouthalongthecentralnorth-southaxisfromtheMeridianGate,the

BeyondtheMeridianGateunfoldsavastcourtyardacrosswhichthe

erisspannedby

fivebridges,whichweresuppodtobesymbolsofthefivevirtues

preachedbyConfucius——benevolence,righteousness,rites,intelligence,andfidelity(3).

Atthenorthendofthecourtyardisathree-tieredwhitemarbleterrace,venmetersabovetheground,onwhich,oneafteranother,standthree

giganticstonewasmovedtothecitybyslidingitoveraspeciallypavedice

ideenoughwatertobuildtheiceroad,wellsweresunkatvery500metersalongtheway.

ThethreehallsoftheInnerPalacearereplicasofthethreehallsinthe

front,ethePalaceofHeavenlyPurity(7),theHallofUnion(8),andthePalaceofEarthlyTranquility(9).

ThePalaceofHeavenlyPuritywasoeQingEmperor

YongZhengmovedhisresidencetothePalaceofMentalCultivationand

turneditintoanaudiencehalltoreceiveforeignenvoysandhandledthe
