            FIRA Standard 6250: 2005 Specification - Furniture Materials (Interior) specifies

            requirements and guidance information for the performance of materials ud in interior

            furniture, including domestic and contract furniture applications.

            2. CLASSIFICATION

            Performance requirements for furniture materials are divided into three main classification

            ratings with the appropriate rating lected according to rvice u.

            Table 1 provides general guidance on the main rvice u applications and recommended

            classification rating. Classification ratings for different properties may be mixed according to

            requirements. For example an office desk will typically require a ‘vere’ rating for finish

            performance and ‘general’ rating for adhesion. (FIRA can advi on the appropriate test

            specification for a product).

            frame joint movements specified are permitted, provided joint integrity is not adverly frame

            joints do not open, become loo or distorted.

            CONSTRUCTION:

            There shall be no obvious joint opening when the sample is viewed with normal or corrected vision at a distance of

            the sample.

            FIRA TEST METHOD 41.

            FREEDOM FROM SHARP EDGES

            Finished components shall not have any sharp edges or splinters that are likely to cau discomfort or injury to

            persons during normal u of the furniture.

            FREEDOM FROM VISUAL DEFECTS:

            When components are viewed with normal or corrected vision at 400 ± 200 mm there shall be no obvious defects

            that would detract from the appearance of the furniture.

            There shall be no obvious joint opening when the sample is viewed with normal or corrected vision at a distance of

            400 ± 200mm. Minor hairline thickness cracks are permitted provided they do detract from the visual appearance of

            the sample.

            The degree of colour change of expod and non-expod areas

            is compared with Standard Grey Scales (ISO 105 - AO2) where 1

            = maximum colour change and 5 = no colour change.

            Gloss levels of desk finishes shall be less than 45 gloss

            units at an angle of incidence of 60 degrees.

            Bad on BS EN ISO 9241 Part 5:1999 Clau 5.4.4 Finish of

            the Work Surface specifies: ‘The finish of the work surfaces

            should not exceed silky matt (corresponding to 45 gloss

            units) to minimi specular reflections’.

            free of major growth defects such as dead knots, knotholes, edge knots, ingrown bark, ring

            shake, tension wood, wane, juvenile wood pith, brittle heart, cross grain cracks.

            Live knots permitted but not to exceed 2 live knots (maximum diameter 6mm) in any visible

            area of the product.

            Maximum of 10% sapwood, provided that it is free from fungal stain.

            The slope of the grain shall not exceed 1 in 8 when measured from the outside edge of

            components.

            *Note: The quality of timber varies significantly according to wood species, price and other processing and grading factors. It

            is therefore recommended timber specifications should fully discusd and agreed in detail with the timber supplier.

            4. MARKING

            Each item for which conformity to this FIRA Standard is claimed the following information shall be made available to the

            purchar, distributor or retailer.

            a) the name, trademark or other means of identification of either the manufacturer, distributor or retailer

            b) the number and date of this FIRA Standard, i.e. FIRA Standard 6250 :2005, together with the appropriate performance

            test rating /classification

            Note: Marking FIRA Standard 6250: 2005 on or in relation to a product reprents a manufacturer's declaration of conformity

            that the product meets the relevant requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is therefore solely the

            responsibility of the person making the claim. For such a declaration third party certification is desirable
