The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival,
is a traditional Chine festival that commemorates the ancient
poet Qu Yuan. The festival is celebrated on the fifth day of
the fifth lunar month in the Chine calendar, usually around
early June.
According to legend, Qu Yuan was a minister in the court who
was deeply trusted by the king. However, he was framed by a
jealous official and forced to leave the court. During his exile,
he wrote a great deal of poetry, expressing his love for his
country and people while feeling disconnected and alone.
One day, when Qu Yuan learned that the country was about to
be invaded, he felt great pain in his heart and decided to commit
suicide by jumping into the river. His followers were so
saddened by his death that they tried to recover his body, but
were unable to find it. They then rowed boats along the river
to arch for him, using their oars to scare away fish and other
creatures from Qu Yuan's body.
To commemorate Qu Yuan's death, people began to eat zongzi
(a traditional Chine food made of glutinous rice wrapped in
reed leaves) and race dragon boats. The tradition of racing
dragon boats has become one of the main activities of the Dragon
Boat Festival, with teams from all over the world participating
in various competitions.
The Dragon Boat Festival is also associated with other
customs such as hanging艾葉和喝雄黃酒. 艾葉 is a plant that
is believed to have medicinal properties and is hung on the door
or worn as a bracelet for protection agnst illness and evil
spirits. 雄黃酒is a type of Chine liquor that is consumed
during the festival and is believed to have medicinal
properties as well.
In English, the Dragon Boat Festival is also known as the
"Tuen Ng Festival" or "Duanwu Festival". The name "Tuen Ng" or
"Tuen Ngor" comes from the Malaysian Peninsula where the
festival was also introduced from China and has been influenced
by Malay culture. "Duanwu" means "duck egg" in Chine, which
refers to the shape of zongzi.
