白楊樹實在是不平凡的,我贊美白楊樹!

White poplar is remarkable, I salute it!

汽車在望不到邊際的高原上奔馳,撲入你的視野的,是黃綠錯綜的一條大氈

子。When your trunk bowls along the pathway on the emingly vast

plateau, a yellow-green patchwork rug flashes into your view.黃的是土,未

開墾的荒地,幾十萬年前由偉大的自然力堆積成功的黃土高原的外殼;綠的呢,是人

類勞力戰勝自然的成果,是麥田,和風吹送,翻起了一輪一輪的綠波,——這時你會真

心佩服昔人所造的兩個字“麥浪”,若不是妙手偶得,便確是經過錘煉的語言精華。

The yellow is soil, virgin soil heaped up millions of years ago by

natural force to form the very crust of this steppe; while the green is

the result of human labor to conquer nature, wheat fields blown by

breeze to surge in green waves——at this moment, you just cannot help

thinking of two words “wheat wave.”If not coined by a genius, it

demonstrates how meticulously our language of art has been refined.黃與

綠主宰著,無邊無垠,坦蕩如砥,這時如果不是宛若并肩的遠山的連峰提醒了你(這些

山峰憑你的肉眼來判斷,就知道是在你腳底下的),你會忘記了汽車是在高原上行

駛。The yellow and green take the reign here, stretching out toward the

horizon as smooth and broad as a whetstone. If not for tho mountain

peaks in the distance ranging abreast with one another,

which appear to the naked eye beneath your feet, you might forget

that you are riding on a highland.這時你涌起來的感想也許是“雄壯”,也許

是“偉大”,諸如此類的形容詞;然而同時你的眼睛也許覺得有點倦怠,你對當前的

“雄壯”或“偉大”閉了眼,而另一種的味兒在你心頭潛滋暗長了——“單調”。

可不是?單調,有一點兒吧?Such epithets as “magnificent” or “great” may

rush swarming to your mind; however, your eyes get somehow tired to the

scene. Closing your eyes then, you may find another nsation bubbling

underneath——“monotony”. Isn’t it? Monotonous. A wee bit, right?

然而剎那間,要是你猛抬眼看見了前面遠遠有一排——不,或者只是三五株,一

株,傲然地聳立,像哨兵似的樹木的話,那你的懨懨欲睡的情緒又將如何?我那時是驚

奇地叫了一聲的。In a trice, looking up, you catch the sight of a row——

no, a few or a couple of trees standing erectly with pride in front like

ntries, what will become of your lethargic mood? I indeed exclaimed

with astonishment at the moment.

那就是白楊樹,西北極普通的一種樹,然而實在是不平凡的一種樹。The are

white poplar trees, a very common flora species in Northwest, but not at

all mediocre.

那是力爭上游的一種樹,筆直的干,筆直的枝。White poplars are aspiring

trees, armed with straight trunk and branches.它的干通常是丈把高,像加過

人工似的,一丈以內絕無旁枝。它所有的丫枝

一律向上,而且緊緊靠攏,也像加過人工似的,成為一束,絕不旁逸斜出。The

trunk, usually ten feet high, bears no lateral branches as if man-made

while its main branches cluster cloly as one bunch, also as if man-

made.它的寬大的葉子也是片片向上,幾乎沒有斜生的,更不用說倒垂了。Its broad

leaves all ri up skywards without any shooting sideways, let alone

drooping down.它的皮光滑而有銀色的暈圈,微微泛出淡青色。這是雖在北方風雪

的壓迫下卻保持著倔強挺立的一種樹。Its skin has a glossy silver halo,

tinged with light green.哪怕只有碗那樣粗細,它卻努力向上發展,高到丈許,兩

丈,參天聳立,不折不撓,對抗著西北風。Even though only measured to the size

of a bowl, it keeps striving upwards to the height of ten feet, double

ten feet, standing towering to the sky and braving against the harsh

northwest wind.

這就是白楊樹,西北極普通的一種樹,然而決不是平凡的樹。

This is poplar tree, a very common flora species in Northwest, but

not at all mediocre.

它沒有婆娑的姿態,沒有屈曲盤旋的虬枝。也許你要說它不美。如果美是專指

“婆娑”或“旁逸斜出”之類而言,那么,白楊樹算不得樹中的好女子。Y et it

has got no attractive frontage or twisted or entangled braches. You may

call it unattractive, if your definition means the graceful carriage and

disposition of a dancer.但是它偉岸,正直,樸質,嚴肅,也不缺乏溫和,更不用提

它的堅強不屈與挺拔,

它是樹中的偉丈夫。Nevertheless, it is generous, upright, solemn and

unaffected and gentile as well, not to mention its tenacity and

perverance當你在積雪初融的高原上走過,看見平坦的大地上傲然挺立這么一株

或一排白楊樹,難道你就只覺得它只是樹?When you pass through the highland

in the ason of thawing snow and behold a row or only one of them, will

you still look on them as mere trees?難道你就不想到它的樸質,嚴肅,堅強不

屈,至少也象征了北方的農民? Can’t you just e that their various decent

qualities are symbols of the farmers there?難道你竟一點也不聯想到,在敵后

的廣大土地上,到處有堅強不屈,就像這白楊樹一樣傲然挺立的守衛他們家鄉的哨兵?

Can’t you just e that there are soldiers everywhere keeping guard

over our homeland just like the poplar trees standing erectly with pride?

難道你又不更遠一點想到,這樣枝枝葉葉靠緊團結,力求上進的白楊樹,宛然象征了

今天在華北平原縱橫決蕩,用血寫出新中國歷史的那種精神和意志?Can’t you e

further that the cloly united branches and leaves and aspiring trees

reprent the fearless, undeterred spirit displayed by our Chine

people in the struggle against the evil forces on the north plains?白楊

樹是不平凡的樹,它在西北極普遍,不被人重視,就跟北方的農民相似;它有極強的生

命力,磨折不了,壓迫不倒,也跟北方的農民相似。Common and not catchy like

farmers in the north, the poplar trees are remarkable for their

unparalleled life strength and will power.我贊美白楊樹,就因為它不但象征

了北方的農民,尤其象征了

今天我們民族解放斗爭中所不可缺的樸質、堅強,力求上進的精神。

I sing prais of white poplar, just becau they symbolize the

character of the north farmers, and embody the spirit of perverance

and aspiration of the people in the fight for National Liberation.

讓那些看不起民眾、賤視民眾、頑固的倒退的人們去贊美那貴族化的楠木(那

也是直挺秀頎的),去鄙視這極常見、極易生長的白楊樹吧,我要高聲贊美白楊

樹!Just let tho obstinate and ignorant people who despi the mass

of people eulogize the graceful and slim Machiles nanmu , I will always

warble out my ode to the white poplar trees!(初譯于2011.11.12)

〔白楊禮贊〕選自《見聞雜記》。本文寫于1941年。當時國民黨反動派消極

抗日,積極反共,使日本帝國主義能夠集中兵力向我抗日根據地瘋狂“掃蕩”。廣大

人民群眾在中國共產黨的領導下,團結一致,頑強戰斗,多次粉碎敵偽的“掃蕩”,鞏

固并發展了敵后的抗日民主根據地。作者從根據地人民身上看到中華民族遠大的前

途,因此寫了這篇文章熱烈的歌頌他們。

〔視野〕視力所及的范圍。

〔妙手偶得〕文學素養深的人偶然間所得到的。語出陸游詩“文章本天成,妙

手偶得之。”

〔錘煉〕這里是反復推敲加以提煉的意思。

〔主宰〕支配。

〔垠(yín)〕地域的界限。

〔坦蕩如砥(dǐ)〕平坦得像磨刀石。

〔潛滋暗長〕暗暗的生長。滋,生長。

〔懨懨(yān yān)〕精神不好,困倦的樣子。

〔旁逸斜出〕意思是,(樹枝)從樹干的旁邊斜伸出來。逸,原有“超過”的意

思。

〔暈(yùn)〕光影、色澤四周模糊的部分。

〔參天〕聳入高空。

〔虬(qiú)枝〕像龍一樣盤曲的枝條。虬,傳說中的一種龍。

〔偉岸〕魁偉,高直。

〔縱橫決蕩〕縱橫馳騁,沖殺突擊。

〔楠(nán)木〕常綠喬木,木質堅實,是貴重的木材。

〔頎(qí)〕高。
